Southeast Alaska's Finest Guiding Service with Alaska Master Guide, Bruce Parker and Registered Guide,
Ann-Marie Parker.
Alaska has a past, until recently, of operating solely on its natural resources, i.e. oil, fish and game, and precious minerals. However, the fishing and tourism industries are now the largest private employers; with fishing remaining somewhat stable or the same, tourism has grown abundantly.
The timber industry has been reduced to almost extinction, for many different reasons. Poor planning and management, cost of timber extraction, few number of jobs created, per cost. Complete clear cutting – damaging the salmon spawning streams with erosion, and creating undesirable sights from large bare clear cuts, are not what guests like to see while touring S.E. Alaska.
We, at Parker Guide Service, promote a healthy lifestyle and industries for all in S.E. Alaska. We believe there are resources enough for everyone, including naturalists, photographers, fishermen, hunters, managed so not to overwhelm the environment or its wildlife and resources, and logging managed properly i.e. selective helicopter logging leaving no big bare clear cuts, with proper management and decisions based on long term goals.
There is, obviously, a capacity in which all activities can be carried out and still maintain the experience, resource, and lifestyle in the Southeast region. If it were to double or triple, it would, and could, not be sustained at the quality level it is now.
Since we plan to be in business a long time to come, we hope that the major portion remaining will, and can, be conserved, enjoyed, and utilized properly for the next generations to come. We feel it is important to work toward that goal.
We are also mindful of our fuel usage. Our vessel, Alaskan Harvest, only uses an average of 2 gallons/guest/hour of cruise time, based on 6 guests. Other larger tour vessels, 120’ to 200’, use 12 gallons or more per guest/cruise hour, or more. While the larger vessels' total hour usage is upward of 100 and more, our's is 10-12 per hour. Alaska Harvest was built with conservation in mind.
